The Calvary Begins in Gethsemane - (03/06/05)

Text: Luke 22: 39-46

Introduction

- Garden of Gethsemane was near the Mount of Olives.
- The gospels inform us that Jesus used to go there.
- The ministry of Jesus is coming to an end.
- The closing is still missing, sweating in tears, treason, judgment, cross and resurrection.
- All these took place from Thursday late at nigh until Sunday in the morning.
- No one wishes to die at the age of 33.
- Crucifixion was common in Palestine; it was dominated by the Romans.
 - As a person who lives in Palestine, Jesus knew that he was going to be crucified

 A) Luke 22:41 “...knelt down and prayed.”

- He isolated himself for a moment; he was by himself to seek God.
- Psalm 50:15. Declaration of Asaph.
- Prayer is the medicine, the only source for life’s crises.
- It was Daniel’s source ( Daniel 6:10)
 - It was Hezekiah’s source ( Isaiah 38:14 )
- It was Paul’s source. ( II Corinthians 12:8 )
- Pray standing was very common. Pray kneeling down was a sign of extreme agony.

B) Luke 22 : “... yet not my will, but yours be done.”

- Jesus had both natures: divine and human.
- The human one appears here: “if possible”
-The tone of voice makes all the difference when he says:
“Your will be done”
1.We can say this with frustration. There is no other way.
2. We can say this as an obligation. As a command, for example.
3. We can say this in complete submission. Perfect trust in the father.
- One of the hardest things in life is to accept what we don’t understand.
- More secure in love, in the presence of the father.
- There are no surprises for God.

C) Luke 22: 44. “...in anguish...his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.”

- This shows us the seriousness of sin.
- The high price to be paid for our salvation.
- Dr. Barbet, French comments on this fact:
“The only evangelist who narrates this fact is a Doctor, Luke.
I am a surgeon. For 13 years lived in the company of cadavers and throughout my career I
studied anatomy deeply. I can write about this suffering of Jesus. The sweat of blood or hematidrosis is a rare phenomenon. It happens in exceptional conditions. A physical weakness accompanied by moral violence caused by deep emotion and fear is necessary to make it happen. Terror, scare and terrible anguish for carrying all the sins of all men, probably crushed Jesus. This tension breaks the capillary veins that are on the sweat glands and the blood mix with sweat and concentrates in the skin which occurs in the entire body"

Conclusion

- We could also talk about the lashes, the thorn crown, the hurting feet carrying the cross, the nailed hands, the terrible thirst, the horrible pains and the final shout; “it is finished.”
- I Peter 1:18. The price for our salvation.
