Friend, Get up! - (02/26/06 - Night)

Text: Luke 8:40-42 and 49-52

Introduction:

Jairus: Leader of the local synagogue. A name that means "God will give light"
The sick daughter was 12 years old
Luke 8:43. A women that was sick for 12 years appears.
Luke 8:42. Jairus needs to wait. God is held up in the midst of the large crowd.
The woman, bound by law to remain inside her house, went looking for Jesus.
Jairus goes to Jesus and begs for his daughter. It is very common in the New Testament for parents to make requests on behalf of their children
The message stays with us.

Luke 8:49
A "messenger of death" arrives. There are individuals that enjoy giving bad news.
Death is the human limit .
For the Jewish, a funeral was a moment of complete desolation. Loud sobbing. They would pound on their chests.
They also pulled their hair. Ripped their clothing.
During the three days that followed, they were prohibited to read the prophets that contained messages of hope.
They could only read Job, Jeremiah and Lamentations
There was no room for faith
Everything that is different from the death of a believer.

Luke 8:50
Jesus: "Don't be afraid. Simply trust me...". It is the voice of hope.
The gospels register 3 occasions where Jesus resurrected life
Jairus' daughter. The widow's son of Nain. Lazarus, his friend.
The girl had just died. The youngster was being led to be buried. Lazarus was already dead for 4 days.
This is enough to prove God's power over death.
John 10:17-18. Demonstrates Jesus' power over his own death.

Luke 8:52
Jesus says: Even dead she is not outside the reach of my power
It is the perfect confidence that Jesus has in God and that we do not have.

Luke 8:53
They laugh at him. A sign of complete confusion.
There was no room for faith in those lives.

Luke 8:54
Jesus says: "Get up, my child". And today he says: "Get up, my friend".
The world walks on a swamp. People are drowning at every moment.
Jesus is the rock. Extends his hand to you and invites you to get up.

Luke 8:55
And the spirit returned
Two lessons here:
1. The separation between the body and spirit.
2. The spirit is immortal. It continues to exist after death.
The question exists: Where will your spirit spend eternity?

Conclusion

In tragic situations it is easy to speak of Jesus. Hospital. Penitentiary, Asylum. Funeral Service.
Do not wait for this type of situation in your life.
Jesus says today: Get Up. You who is SPIRITUALLY DEAD.

Help us to serve you better
