We need Old Blind Men (11/09/03)

In one of his sermons, Spurgeon, considered 'The Prince of Preachers', told the story of a great preacher who gained many souls for Christ. One night it was revealed to him that he wouldn't receive a reward for those souls. He asked 'Why' and heard the answer: 'The reward will be for that Old Man seated on the first seat of the church .' He spent all his time praying for the lost ones. With this story, Spurgeon wanted to highlight the value of the intercessory prayer.

I need Blind and Old Men. The more I pray and put before God the acts of my ministry, the more I feel the need of Old Blind Men praying for me when I 'm in pastoral counseling, visits, etc.

Not only I need Old Blind Men but also our churches need believers who dedicate themselves to intercessory prayer. The congregation and the families of the church also need it. 'Pray for each other' says James. Paul says he prayed for the church in Thessalonians (II Thess. 2:11) and he asked them to pray for him (I Thess. 5:25).

It impresses us - the picture of the Primitive Church and its faithfulness as well as the Contemporary Church and its inattentiveness. There are little Old Blind Men in today's churches.

Cultivate a life of prayer. Set aside some time alone to pray for the lives of your brothers. List the sick people of the church, the ones that are in need, or those who are weak in faith. Pray for them.

The Kearny Baptist Church needs old blind men.
