The book of Nehemiah is so rich with principles of leadership that some Universities have been using it inside classes. It shows God’s strategies to do a great work using common people.
In chapter 3, the work of reconstruction of the temple begins. There was a lot of work to be done. The leadership of Nehemiah by itself wasn’t enough; people had to be involved in the work.
What does God do when His people work?
| 1. | He observes the ones who really work. Verse 3 says that Hassenaah’s son’s rebuilt “The Fish Gate” with great dedication. A beautiful work using wood. They took care of its doors, bolts and bars. They did not do only half of the work. |
| 2. | He observes the ones who don’t work. In verse 5 we read “the nobles would not put their shoulders to the work”. These men only watched. The idea is that they did not carry anything, did not place weight on their shoulders or heads. The material was heavy. There were no machines like today; everything had to be carried by men. |
| 3. | He observes the spirit in which each person does the work. In verse 20 Baruch zealously and with total dedication did the work. He put his heart in that. |
As a church of Christ, we are involved in a great work. In which group do you find yourself? Are you working? Great! Have you been observing? Or is your spirit like Baruch’s spirit? God observes our work today. Work hard!
