Abandon It All - (07/24/05)

“In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he cannot be my disciple”.
(Luke 14:33)

To be a disciple of Jesus it’s is necessary to abandon everything. That’s the real meaning of His words. We may not like the demand, but the fact that it is the Word of God remains.

Anthony Norris Groves, and his wife, first missionaries in Baghdad, were convinced they should stop storing up on earth, and that they should dedicate all their income in the service of the Lord. They wrote about it on the little book “Christian Devotedness”.

C. T. Studd decided to give all his fortune to Christ, taking advantage of the opportunity he had, different from the rich man mentioned on in the Bible. Simple obedience to the Word of God. After distributing millions of dollars to the missionary work, he reserved $9.588 to give to his wife in the day of marriage. She asked: “Charles, what did God ask the rich man to do?
“To sell everything” was his answer.
So let us begin now, in our marriage. And she gave all the money to missions.

The same spirit of dedication excited Jim Elliot. He wrote in his diary: “Father, allow me to be weak so I may loose every attachment to temporary things. My life, my reputation, my possessions. Make me open my hands. Also want to loose my love and attachments for compliments. Open my hands as Christ did, to receive the nails of the Calvary. Christ did not attach himself even to the heavens, to His equality to God, but came to this world, giving himself in the cross of Calvary.

William MacDonald.
