In the Cardiology American College encounter in Orlando, FL, last week, two scientific studies were presented. In the first study, researchers affirmed that a daily burst of laughter is good for the heart as well as the practice of exercises. To laugh force the blood vessels to work in a more efficient way. In another study, researchers demonstrated that depression may increase the risk of death by heart failure. Dr. Michael Miller and his fellows showed a humor movie and then a stressing movie to 20 healthy volunteers to test their blood vessels. They discovered that the blood flow presented a reduction in 14 of the 20 people watching the stressing movie. On the other hand the blood flow was better in 19 people who were laughing when watching the humor movie. On the average, the blood flow was increased 20% during the moments of laughing and diminished 35% during the moments of mental stress. The specialist also said that laughing may be as important as to exercise; without the risk of pain or muscular tension. Does the bible talk about this? Let’s see some texts: “I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live.”( Ecclesiastes 3:12 ) “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior”. ( Habakkuk 3:18 ) “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete”. ( John 15:11 ) “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” ( Philippians 4:4 ) After this, what can we conclude? Things that science is discovering now, the Bible had recommended more than two thousand years ago. Remember, to be happy is a decision we make ( John 15:11 ). Charles Swindoll, in the book “Laugh Again” says: “Joyful people live in the present. Because to remember the past involves sadness and to think in the future brings anxiety. Dr. Miller and his fellows recommend 15 minutes of laughing everyday. With Jesus in the heart it’s not that difficult! Pr Alcione.
