The Formula For Happiness - (03/12/06)

If you are a happy person and you are conscious of that, then your mood is the result of P+5E+3A. This is the formula for happiness that British researchers (Carol Rothwell and Pete Cohen) have found to determine the emotional state of a person.

In the equation, P corresponds to the person (determines the person’s vision, adaptability and flexibility); E measures what is essential and existential (health, financial stability, friendships); and A represents the things that the interviewer considers a high potential (self-esteem, ambitions and expectations).

The researchers asked a series of questions to their interviewers related to these three variables. When the answers added the maximum in the application of the formula, then the person had 100 points, and it means the greatest happiness. The studies also revealed that the women identified the family as the greatest source of happiness, followed by “The Dream Vacation”, sun and weight loss. For men, happiness if linked to vacation, romances, sexual life and entertainment like sports and clubs.

Some people say they have everything and are still not happy. They have a good self-esteem; ambitions and expectations, health, financial stability, good friends and specially a good vision of the world. All of this is great!
But there is still something that’s missing.
Psalm 128, says: “Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways! You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your sons will be like olive shoots around your table. Thus is the man blessed who fears the Lord! Psalm 1 says “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked...but his delight is in the law of the Lord and on his law he meditates day and night.”

Jesus can’t lack in the formula of happiness. He is the one who gives meaning to our existence. He offers abundant life; happiness and salvation.
